Violent Behavior in Children and Adolescents

  •  Violent Behavior in Children and Adolescents

Recently, the incidence of violent behavior among children and adolescents has increased dramatically. This complex and troubling issue needs to be carefully understood by parents, teachers, and other adults. Major violence behaviors seen in children and adolescents include explosive temper tantrums, physical aggression, fighting, threats or attempts to hurt others, use of weapons, cruelty toward animals. Violence behaviors can also be observed in pre-school age children. Violence should be taken seriously no matter how old the child is. This situation should not be regarded as "just a phase they are going through"

Research studies have  concluded that a complex interaction or combination of factors leads to an increased risk of violent behavior in children and adolescents.

Exposure to violence in the media (TV, movies, games, etc.)

             Physical or sexual abuse

Exposure to violence at home or in the community

             Genetic (family heritability) factors

             Drug or alcohol use

The presence of firearms in the house

Combination of stressful family socioeconomic factors (poverty, severe deprivation, marital breakup, single parenting, unemployment, loss of support from extended family)

             Brain damage from head injury

What can be done if a child shows violent behavior?

A comprehensive evaluation should be made by experts. According to the evaluation, typically focus on helping the child to: learn how to control his/her anger; express anger and frustrations in appropriate ways; be responsible for his/her actions; and accept consequences. In addition, family conflicts, school problems, and community issues must be addressed. Early intervention by experts can help to control problematic behavior.
